Managing Assumption of Responsibility in the Fact-Checking Report Genre

This article discusses the application of the notion of enunciative responsibility (ER) in fact-checking reports, aiming to highlight the marks of (non-)assumption of viewpoints in the selected excerpts. The analysis focuses on two reports published on the online fact-checking platforms AFP Checamos and Agência Lupa, verifying the falsity of content about the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine that circulated massively in the digital environment in 2020 and 2021. As a theoretical-methodological anchor, the theoretical postulates of textual discourse analysis (TDA) were mobilized, according to Adam (2011; 2020), in dialogue with other postulates by Rabatel (2009, 2013, 2017) and Maingueneau (2004). The results revealed that, to fulfill their communicative purpose, the primary speaker-enunciators (L1/E1), specialized agencies, used as their main discursive strategy the attribution of viewpoints to specialized sources capable of providing technical information on the fact-checked topic. By engaging with these viewpoints, these L1/E1s demonstrate their agreement through textual marks that semanticize others' words.
