Reading Gestures of the Picturebook Ida e Volta by Juarez Machado: Mobilizing Discourse Analysis in School Practices

This article discusses reading gestures of picturebooks, grounded in the theoretical and methodological framework of Materialist Discourse Analysis. Understanding that the reader-subject produces meanings while being simultaneously constituted, we propose that reading a picturebook goes beyond the apparent notion that this material merely serves to encourage or innovate reading practices. Reading the image mobilizes the emergence of the child reader-subject’s stance towards what is read. The corpus of this study consists of responses and activities derived from a reading practice of the picturebook Ida e Volta (Juarez Machado), followed by the collective production of a picturebook involving fourth-grade students from an elementary school in northwestern Paraná, Brazil. The analysis results highlight, on one hand, the polysemic nature of the image as students attribute meanings to the book's scenes, and on the other, a relationship of identification with a consumerist discursive formation, echoing meanings related to the tension between care and material loss.
