THE REPRESENTATION OF "OBJECTS" IN ARCHIVES
the case of the photographic archive

The diversity of languages and documentary media present in archives reflects the intrinsic complexity of archival collections shaped by their production contexts. The study of the Conde de Thomar fonds serves as an example for empirical research on the representation of “objects” in personal archives, grounded on postmodern archival theory. Simultaneously, the archival practices of the Lisbon Photographic Archive, the institution mediating the fonds’ information, are analyzed, and a data collection sheet is proposed for the archival description of “objects”. The adopted qualitative methodology is based on documentary research and case study approaches, framed within a pragmatic paradigm. The study concludes that the quality of archival information, regardless of its genre or medium, is determined by how the information is interpreted and processed, guided by its purpose and in dialogue with the functions and contextual practices of the information-mediating institution.
