CONCEPT MAPS IN INFORMATION SCIENCE RESEARCH
perspectives in the light of an integrative literature review

This article presents a bibliographic research study on the incorporation of concept maps in scientific practice within Information Science. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research, developed through an integrative review approach, was to analyze how these tools have been treated as instruments supporting research in Information Science, directing their contexts of use and complexity. Methodology: The method used was evidence-based practice, where rigorous validation of the evidence was in place. This review follows the stages proposed by Mendes, Silveira, and Galvão in identifying the research problem, studying the literature, evaluating data, analyzing and interpreting results, and presenting the review. Articles published between 2015 and 2024 were reviewed, from sources comprising the CAPES journal portal and Brapci. Of the 18 articles in Portuguese found, 5 worthily fulfilled the selection criteria. Regarding English-language articles, 30 were found and only 2 were relevant. Overall, 10 scientific articles were deemed acceptable for this analysis. Results: The results revealed that concept maps were useful tools to organize and represent knowledge, particularly in information retrieval, knowledge organization, and information literacy domains, which fosters a better understanding of the relationships between concepts. Conclusion: It was also concluded that there is an emerging need for the adoption of research methodologies that could offer increased assets to inquiries within the domain pertaining to knowledge representation as well as information or even data visualization.
