Abstract

This experience report addresses the practices of the Central Library team at Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) in the Laboratory of Informational Accessibility and Inclusion (LAII) in facing the challenges of informational accessibility for visually impaired individuals, focusing on the Moradores da Floresta exhibition. It is a qualitative and descriptive study that discusses the results in light of academic production in Information Science and Librarianship. A bibliographic review was conducted to understand best practices in audio description, detailing the steps taken. The keywords audio description, accessibility, and image guided the research of guidelines and methodologies. The study concludes by highlighting the relevance of informational accessibility for inclusion, demonstrating how LAII uses audio description to make visual information accessible, sharing important practices to promote equal access to information.

Author Biographies

Rosa da Penha Ferreira da Costa, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES)

PhD in Information Science (Dinter UnB/UFES - 2012-2016). She holds a Master's degree in Arts from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (2012), and undergraduate degrees in Library Science (1990), Fine Arts (1995), and Archival Science (2006). She is currently an Adjunct Professor 4 in the Department of Archival Science at the Federal University of Espírito Santo. She has experience in the field of Information Science and Archival Science, focusing mainly on the following topics: photography, memory, city, document preservation, university archives, public archives, archival policy, creative process archives, historical, artistic, and cultural heritage. She was the Coordinator of the Master's Program in Information Science from 12/2018 to 08/2022 (PPGCI/UFES), Coordinator of the Research Center 'Tabularium - Archive Policies: Observatory in the State of Espírito Santo,' and Coordinator of Teaching Laboratory 2 in the Archival Science program. She is a member of the Central Document Evaluation Commission (CCAD) at UFES and the President of the Structuring Teaching Nucleus (NDE).

Luiz Carlos da Silva, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES)

PhD in Information Science from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2020), Master in Information Science from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2013), and Bachelor in Archival Science from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (2006). Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Department of Archival Science at UFES, and Professor in the Graduate Program in Information Science at UFES. He participates in the research group called Tabularium, acting as vice coordinator. He coordinates the Information Preservation Center (NUPI), located in the Laboratory for Preservation and Research of Archival and Bibliographic Documents (LPPDAB). His research focuses on the following topics: institutional memory; documentary heritage; preservation, conservation, and restoration of documents; public policies in Archival Science, archival functions, information policies, information and memory, and Information Science.
