Free relatives and partial interrogatives: how Óscar Lopes viewed some of these constructions
Abstract
In this paper we analyze some syntactic and semantic properties of free relatives and wh subordinate interrogatives, both proper and improper, developing Brito (1991), Brito & Duarte (2003), Móia (1996), Veloso (2013), Matos & Brito (2013), Mioto& Lobo (2016), correlating them with the way Óscar Lopes described these constructions; we highlight structural and semantic ambiguity of some of wh constructions. We argue for the existence of several types of free relatives, mainly ones with definite, universal and indefinite meaning.
