HACKING THE SYSTEMS:

A CONVERSATION WITH MARC-ANTOINE LÉVAL

Abstract

The field of art is not a homogeneous structure. By definition, it is organized based on its many disputes, real classificatory struggles about the cultural arbitraries that operate the regimes of legitimacy. Essentially asymmetrical, the art field is, therefore, a social space full of hierarchizations that produces and reproduces inequalities among artists, markets, and institutions. Although a cohesive "system," this structure is not completely safeguarded from possible symbolic processes of hacking. In this interview with the French artist, Marc-Antoine Léval, we will address issues such as the hacking of artistic circuits, the immateriality of art, and a certain "artivism" as a mode of survival in the cultural field of contemporaneity.
