Abstract

The study examines the practice of assigning nicknames and their regional variation in Portugal, based on records from the Grémio dos Armadores de Navios da Pesca do Bacalhau, covering the period from 1935 to 1975. This archive, containing around 21,000 records, includes 4,200 nicknames, highlighting their relevance as identity markers. The study also analyses the evolution of legal norms that, initially restrictive, began to recognize the historical and identity value of nicknames, allowing their incorporation as surnames.
