"Por refrenarle de todas passiones": uma pedagogia das emoções em Francisco de Monçon
Abstract
This study analyzes the relationship between civility, emotions, and politics in Francisco de Monçon's work Libro primero del Espejo del príncipe christiano (1544), proposing a dialogue with the history of emotions. Monçon developed a pedagogical model oriented toward the moral and emotional formation of the Christian prince, centered on the internalization of norms of self-control. The main mechanisms of emotional restraint are identified as the cultivation of wisdom, obedience, regulation of moments of leisure, and chastity. Finally, it is argued that this normativity contributed to the symbolic construction of royal power in modern Portugal.
