Military orders were one of the most complex and enduring institutional phenomena in medieval Europe and the early modern period. Emerging in a context of territorial expansion, armed conflict and profound religiosity, these institutions articulated spiritual, military, social, economic and charitable
dimensions that went far beyond the strictly military sphere.
This monographic issue proposes a comparative approach, open to different geographical areas and historiographical traditions. The aim is to encourage contributions that analyse both norms and discourses as well as everyday practices, built spaces and mechanisms of institutional transformation.
Researchers are invited to submit original papers addressing the following topics:
• The study of documentation preserved in archives
• The territories where military orders were established and their relationship with power and local communities.
• The daily life of their members, including issues such as illness, food, etc.
• The hospitable and charitable dimension, both in its ideological formulation and in its concrete practices.
• The regulatory frameworks governing the spiritual and community life of military orders.
• The processes of decline, adaptation and reform in the lives of members of the orders
• The analysis of architecture, spaces and assets, taking into account their functionality, symbolism and evolution.
The journal welcomes submissions of original articles in Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English.
The Journal also invites submissions for the ‘Other Studies’ and ‘Book Reviews’ sections.
