The image not yet seen, or national identity according to Eduardo Loureço
Abstract
Saudade’s Labirinth «is probably Eduardo Lourenço’s best-known book», as João Dionísio wrote. Its fame, however, did not provide and even hindered a true discussion of its content. This paper aims to be a contribution to this missing discussion. It presents a hypothesis to explain the myth that surrounded this work as well as its author, trying to demonstrate that the key to this explanation, more than in Portuguese cultural history, lies above all in Portuguese political circumstances at the time it was published.
