Abstract

Contemporary society is characterized by constant and accelerated changes, requiring museums to keep up with this evolution in order to maintain their relevance. The transformation of the museum concept reflects this need for adaptation: an institution initially conceived as a temple, dedicated only to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of objects, has evolved to serve society as a forum, promoting community participation, diversity, and sustainability.

This article presents a case study of the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis (MNSR), focused on evaluating its Educational Service. The research was developed as part of the curricular internship for the Master’s degree in Sociology at Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto and used qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and surveys. The results allow for an analysis of how the MNSR alight with the expectations of a museum institution in contemporary society. In addition to the critical reflection, recommendations are provided to enhance the museum’s relationship with the community and strengthen the impact of its educational practices.
