Abstract

This study investigates intertextual clues of the role of racial categorisation in the (dis)

alignment of the meaning attributed by opinion articles’ authors to the hashtag #SomosTodos-

Macacos. The hashtag #SomosTodosMacacos was posted on the Instagram social network by Neymar Júnior on April 27, 2014, in response to a racist incident that occurred on the same day against his then-teammate Daniel Alves during a football match. The study is grounded in socio-cognitivist studies of Textual Linguistics and a socio-historical-cultural perspective on racial categorisation. The methodology involved analysing intertextual features in 10 opinion articles published between April 27 and May 3, 2014, regarding #SomosTodosMacacos. The study’s findings suggest that black authors tend to adopt a critical stance toward the implicitly racist meaning attributed to the #SomosTodosMacacos through intertextual forms of disalignment and other textual constructions.
