Abstract

Emotions are constitutive of argumentative activity and have originated renewed interest in modern theories of argumentation. Our analysis focuses some “pathemization” strategies (Charaudeau, 2000; Plantin, 2000, 2002, 2011; Micheli, 2007, 2008a, 2008b, 2010) used to act upon one Other. In na attempt to make Others to act, emotions are semiotized and turned into the object of discourse, to the point that one may speak of their “argumentability”. Using excerpts extracted from a corpus constituted by opinion press texts published prior to a referendum, particular emphasis will be given to the enunciative-pragmatic and configurational dimensions of discourse, especially to its argumentative structure and how emotions are semiotized and convey other voices and discourses as a means to exhert influence.
