Synopsis
The understanding of the city as a “work of art” has been developed in Europe since the sixteenth century by historians and professionals in the fields of urbanism and architecture. Drawing on the concepts of “iconography” and “iconology” defined by Erwin Panofsky, it is possible to “decipher” the city and propose its cultural meanings. To this end, different forms of representation of urban space are mobilised, namely cartography, views and panoramas, as well as representations of monuments or specific sections of the urban fabric, among others. Taken together, these elements constitute the iconography of cities, recorded across a wide range of media, from graphic and artistic forms such as engraving, painting, and drawing, or, in certain contexts, tilework, to technological media such as photography and video. More recent forms of urban appropriation, such as urban art, are also included. Contemporary in situ representation practices, such as those promoted by the Urban Sketchers collective, are likewise considered.
This dossier aims to enrich the body of work on the iconography of cities through new research, within a broad and interdisciplinary framework encompassing history, art history, architecture, geography, anthropology, and philosophy, expanding the concept and relating it to contemporary challenges.
No. 29: PERIODICAL PRESS: REPRESENTATION, INFORMATION AND POWER FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE PRESENT DAY

Synopsis
A major means of disseminating information, regularly issued publications first appeared in Europe in the first half of the seventeenth century. Their role has continued to grow ever since, reaching a global scale and serving a wide range of interests and purposes, from news to simple recreation and leisure, from the popularizations of practices and knowledge to cultural dissemination, as well as the circulation of ideologies and doctrines of all kinds, political, economic, and religious.
Periodical publications became the voice of groups of power and knowledge at very different levels, taking a variety of forms, including bulletins, almanacs, newspapers and magazines, within a publishing landscape marked by major differences in relevance, function, longevity, graphic quality, circulation, geographical reach and target readership, among other factors. While emerging groups found in the periodical press a means of exercising their material and symbolic power and of maintaining and promoting their organisations and normative value frameworks, associations of individuals — particularly professional associations, but also associations of all kinds — sought visibility and cohesion, as well as a platform for asserting their identity and voicing their claims.
This thematic dossier seeks to bring together studies that contribute to deepening and broadening knowledge of periodical journalism as a multidimensional and global phenomenon. It welcomes a plurality of theoretical and methodological approaches, including case studies and comparative analyses, research based on previously unpublished or rare sources, and innovative reassessments of well-known or even canonical collections.
