Author Guidelines

GENERAL INFORMATION

Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal does not charge any fees for the submission process, peer review, publication and availability of texts.

• The paper is original, unpublished and the parts that come from other works are duly referenced. It is not under review or for publication in another journal. Otherwise, the author(s) should inform the journal editors.

• The author(s) assume(s) responsibility for all the information contained in the text. The author(s) acknowledge that all submitted manuscripts will be subject to plagiarism screening.

• Authorship is subject to a grace period of four issues. Only one proposal per author and/or co-author will be accepted for a single issue.

ACCEPTED CONTRIBUTIONS FOR PUBLICATION

The journal is organised into different sections that reflect the diversity of formats and approaches characterising scholarly production, and privilege critical and interdisciplinary perspectives.

• The Dossier brings together a set of studies on a common theme, enabling an in-depth and articulated exploration of its multiple dimensions (up to 10,000 words, including footnotes and references).

• The Articles section publishes original, stand-alone contributions that are independent from the Dossier theme (up to 10,000 words, including footnotes and references).

• Reviews aim to provide informed analyses of recent publications (published within the last two years), focusing on a single book (up to 2,000 words).

• The Interview section features conversations with researchers and specialists, highlighting their trajectories, experiences and perspectives (up to 8,000 words).

STYLE AND FORMATTING

Authors should use the article submission template and follow the formatting provided therein.

• Language of the text: Portuguese (according to the new spelling agreement), Spanish, French or English. Title, abstract and keywords in the language of the text, in English and in Portuguese.

• Maximum of 10 images, although this limit may be altered by the editors. All images, tables and charts must be numbered sequentially and their position in the text must be indicated. Images must have an associated caption and tables and graphs must have a title (and caption, if applicable). Images must be referenced in the text. Images that belong to the collection of the Lisbon Municipal Archive can be used as available on the respective website. Those that are not part of this collection must be delivered as separate files, in jpeg or tiff format.

• Authors are solely responsible for obtaining publication rights for images used in the articles, or for any other copyrighted material (property, etc.) that is not part of the Lisbon Municipal Archive's collection and will only be published on presentation of proof of publication authorisation.

CITATIONS AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES

• All studies and printed sources cited in the text must be included in a final list of bibliographical references, presented in accordance with APA guidelines (7th edition). This list can only contain the studies and printed sources cited in the text. Examples can be found in the submission template.

• If handwritten sources are cited in the text, they should be footnoted.

SELECTION, REVISION AND PUBLICATION

1. Desk Review
This process is carried out by the Executive Editors and the Scientific Coordinator(s) of the issue, and takes place in two stages:

Stage 1
• Analysis of the manuscript to assess its scientific quality and relevance to the journal’s scope, as well as compliance with submission guidelines.
• Identification of recycled text and plagiarism. In such cases, the manuscript is returned to the author. Articles or translations previously published in other journals are not accepted.

Stage 2
• The Scientific Coordinator(s) performs a content-level assessment and provides a recommendation to the Executive Editors on whether the manuscript should: 1. be returned to the author for revision; 2. proceed to peer review, or; 3. be rejected outright.
• Manuscripts that do not meet the scientific quality criteria identified during the content-level assessment will be returned to the author(s) for revision and may be resubmitted one final time. If revised, the author(s) may resubmit the manuscript one final time. Manuscripts that still do not meet the criteria after resubmission will be definitively rejected.

2. Scientific Review
Each article is sent to two external referees for double-blind peer review, ensuring anonymity for both authors and reviewers. If the article is from a preprint repository, the evaluation process is semi-open, with reviewers’ anonymity fully maintained (see Admission of preprints).

The reviewers provide an opinion with one of the following recommendations: accept the manuscript as is; reject the manuscript; or suggest revision. In cases where revision is recommended, updated versions of the manuscript will undergo additional review rounds by the original referees to substantiate a final decision. Additional referees may be invited if significant discrepancies arise between reports. If further clarification is required, the Scientific Coordinator may be consulted to provide an additional assessment. In the absence of a Scientific Coordinator, members of the Advisory Board may be called upon to provide supplementary assessments.

Supported by the reviewers reports and the Scientific Coordinator's assessment, the Executive Editors reaches a decision by consensus which is then formally communicated to the author(s).

The review process is scheduled to last three months and its final outcome, which is unappealable in all cases, is communicated to the author(s) within a maximum of six months.

3. Copy Desk
Once the article has been approved, the editing process for publication begins.

The editors reserve the right to make any necessary formal changes, such as correcting citations and bibliographical references, as long as the meaning of the text remains unchanged.

During the Copy Desk, the author may be asked to make adjustments or add missing elements.

4. Publication
Each article is assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). Once the above steps have been completed, the article is published in continuous publication mode. The author(s) are notified by the editors of the publication of their article. Articles are expected to be published within 12 months.

Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal recommends consulting the Ethics and Good Practices in Publishing.

The authors are solely responsible for the opinions expressed, even in cases where modifications are suggested to the texts originally submitted.
