Abstract

The last two American elections proved that the polarization in the country is high and that both political spectrums use propaganda to defend their ideas. This essay frames the policy of former President of the United States of America Donald Trump through a parallelism with the ideas of propagandist Edward Bernays. The objective is not to explain what led the electorate to support Donald Trump, but rather to demonstrate how some of the politician's practices are anchored, even if not intentionally, in Bernays' theory. For this study, the work “Propaganda” by Edward Bernays was used. In order to supplement the research, it was also used another complementary bibliography and some of the recent history of American politics. It was possible to infer that the techniques devised by Bernays were used by Trump and proved to be key to the 2016 presidential victory.
