Historiographical biography provides a unique space for expressing new perspectives on reported events, functioning as a locus of counter-argumentation against previously established discourses about the biographed figure. In this sense, this genre fosters reflections on the relationships between history, memory, and identity, contributing to the production of (new) meanings through a memorialistic narrative. From this perspective, this study analyzes the projected images of Luiz Carlos Prestes associated with the political-military movement of the Coluna Prestes as presented in Luiz Carlos Prestes, um comunista brasileiro, written by his daughter, Anita Leocádia Prestes. To achieve this, we employ the Modes of Discourse Organization proposed by Charaudeau’s Semiolinguistic Theory (2008), with a focus on the Descriptive and Narrative Modes. The study highlights how historiographical biographical writing articulates memory and identity, generating effects from its discursive materiality that resonate with the memories of Luiz Carlos Prestes from the author's perspective and, concurrently, with the collective memory of the Brazilian nation.
Raquel Lima de Abreu-Aoki Marcia Elisia Matos Aguiar Copyright (c) 2024 Raquel Lima de Abreu-Aoki, Marcia Elisia Matos Aguiar https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 15 39 10.21747/21833958/red15a1 The Hermeneutic Framework: A Category for Negotiating Meaning Effects in the Work Symetrias Dyssonantes by Luiz Brás https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14147
This article explores the enunciative-discursive constitution of the hermeneutic framework in literary statements extracted from the short story collection Symetrias Dyssonantes by Luiz Brás, employing the theoretical and methodological framework of French Discourse Analysis. Based on Maingueneau (2006), the hermeneutic framework serves as a category that provides conditions for negotiating meaning effects in literary discourse, as it maps discursive formations without hierarchizing them. The research examines the hermeneutic framework through the discursive formations of Brazilian Science Fiction (BSF), Philosophy—particularly the concept of rhizome by Deleuze and Guattari (1995)—and Metafiction, as proposed by Hutcheon (1994). The study situates BSF within the 21st century, emphasizing its speculative nature in addressing scientific, cultural, and social issues relevant to contemporary science. Deleuze and Guattari’s (1995) notion of the rhizome sheds light on the literary work as a machinic assemblage characterized by multiplicity and continuous reconfiguration. Metafiction, on the other hand, facilitates reflection on the narrative's nature and the interaction between fiction and reality, highlighting BSF's ability to question and expand the boundaries of literature by engaging the co-enunciator in creating meanings from unfolded realities. Ultimately, the research underscores the importance of a critical co-enunciator in literary enunciation, one that explores the interpretive possibilities offered by interdiscourse.
Ricardo Celestino Copyright (c) 2024 Ricardo Celestino https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 40 70 10.21747/21833958/red15a2 Argumentation and Non-Partisan School: debating the factuality of leftist hegemony https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14459
The Non-Partisan School has been a topic of discussion in the Brazilian media sphere since the early 2000s. Throughout the debate, discussions around certain points of disagreement between what supporters and opponents of ESP considered factual became increasingly relevant, giving rise to subsidiary disputes within the larger debate. In this article, we aim to analyze the dynamics of refutation of one of the problem-framing arguments around the original proposal to implement the NPS. To this end, we draw on discussions of epistemic argumentation (Toulmin, 2006[1958]; Toulmin, Rieke, & Janik, 1984[1978]), practical argumentation (Gonçalves-Segundo, 2023; Fairclough & Fairclough, 2012), argumentative script (da Silva, 2022; da Silva; Gonçalves-Segundo, 2024; Gonçalves-Segundo, 2023, 2024; Plantin, 2008[2005]; Grácio, 2015), argumentative question (Grácio, 2013; Plantin, 2008[2005]; Gonçalves-Segundo, 2020), and subordinate argumentative question. For our analysis, we use the reconstruction of two arguments derived from and reconstructed based on excerpts from a set of texts discussing the NPS, which, analytically, allows us to observe the argumentative dynamics of the argumentative script (da Silva, 2022) within the dispute. The results indicate a movement towards raising questions about what was originally viewed as uncontested, allowing us to capture how different discursivities view reality based on their value commitments.
Lucas Pereira da Silva Copyright (c) 2024 Lucas Pereira da Silva https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 71 104 10.21747/21833958/red15a3 Controversy and Disagreement Among Online Newspaper Readers: An Analysis Procedure to Characterize Verbal Violence https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14279
This article aims to discuss an analysis procedure for verbal violence, correlating interactional and rhetorical-discursive aspects related to its emergence conditions, especially controversy and disagreement, and its manifestation forms, in terms of impoliteness and appraisal. Theoretically, the conceptions of controversy, disagreement, and agreement are grounded in rhetorical and discursive approaches (Perelman; Olbrechts-Tyteca, 2020; Kerbrat-Orecchioni, 1980; Amossy, 2017; Neves, 2017). The manifestations of verbal violence will consider Culpeper's (1996; 2005; 2011) impoliteness theory and the attitude and graduation subsystems of the appraisal system (Martin; White, 2005) from a systemic-functional perspective (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004). The corpus, selected to illustrate the method, comprises comments from the online newspaper Folha de S.Paulo regarding the issue of abortion, a potentially controversial topic. Initial analysis results have shown the productivity of our model to refine the description of verbal violence acts. We have observed the importance of disagreement between values and value hierarchies for the emergence of verbal violence and the high incidence of attitude instances linked to judgments of social sanction, scoped by high intensification resources, as an evaluation strategy in response to disagreements.
Adelmo Cordeiro Galindo Paulo Roberto Gonçalves-Segundo Copyright (c) 2024 Adelmo Cordeiro Galindo, Paulo Roberto Gonçalves-Segundo https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 105 135 10.21747/21833958/red15a4 Dialogues Between Interculturality and Plurilingualism in Educational Guidelines in Brazil https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14493
Recent developments in the educational context highlight a growing recognition of interculturality and plurilingualism, despite persistent challenges to their full implementation in Brazil's educational sphere. This study aims to analyze the relationship between plurilingualism and interculturality in contemporary Brazilian educational guidelines. The theoretical and methodological foundation of this research is based on the concept of plurilingual education and its main characteristics (Megale, 2018; Hamers and Blanc, 2000; García, 2009). Guided by Volóchinov’s sociological method (2017), the study examines discursive constructions from Opinion No. 2/2020, directed to the National Education Council (CNE) and the Basic Education Chamber (CEB), which presents the National Curriculum Guidelines for the provision of Plurilingual Education in Brazil. The findings indicate that the integration of plurilingualism and interculturality fosters an education that transcends mere language acquisition, promoting a teaching environment that values cultural diversity.
Yanê Batista Santos Lins Yuri Andrei Batista Santos Urbano Cavalcante Filho Copyright (c) 2024 Yanê Batista Santos Lins, Yuri Andrei Batista Santos, Urbano Cavalcante Filho https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 136 167 10.21747/21833958/red15a5 On Academic-Scientific Writing: The Essay from the Perspective of Postgraduate Students https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14156
This article analyzes reading reports produced by students within the framework of a postgraduate course conducted as a workshop on academic literacies. The workshop problematized traditionally unquestioned boundaries in science, which, in scientific practice and writing, are marked by the exclusion of subjectivity, personal voice, and opinion, in favor of objectivity, impersonality, and truth. For the reading report, students were asked to compare the guidelines from a technical and scientific writing manual with one of three excerpts from essays written by three authors from different areas of knowledge. This comparison considered formal characteristics, including enunciative aspects. The study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions of scientific values, particularly the potential tensions between the manual’s standardizing guidelines and the essay as a genre, which, despite its presence in various fields of knowledge, does not adhere to certain imperatives that govern contemporary academic-scientific writing practices. The analysis and interpretation of 32 reports were conducted from a discursive perspective within applied linguistics. The results highlight students’ observations, particularly: (a) the absence of explicit theoretical support in the essays, which was evaluated in the reports as a deficiency in the essayists' argumentation; (b) the absence of bibliographic references in certain passages; and (c) the prominent presence of the authorial voice in the text, perceived as "freedom" of creation. These three observations reflect a dominant representation of academic-scientific writing among the students.
João Vitor Moreira Manoel Luiz Gonçalves Corrêa Copyright (c) 2024 João Vitor Moreira, Manoel Luiz Gonçalves Corrêa https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 168 201 10.21747/21833958/red15a6 “Elas que lucrem”: An Analysis of the Women's Empowerment Discourse https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14349
This study aims to reflect on the interplay between discourses on femininity and neoliberalism within journalistic content targeted at women. Grounded in the theoretical foundation and methodological principles of Materialist Discourse Analysis (MDA), originally proposed in France by Pêcheux and further developed in Brazil by Orlandi, we focus specifically on the operation of empowerment discourse. This discourse reactivates sayings produced elsewhere while updating them concerning the role and place of women in our social formation. Accordingly, we analyze the website Elas que lucrem ("Let Them Profit"), featured on the Terra portal, to understand the meanings circulating in the media about women. Our analysis centers on the different significant materialities present in the sections “Quem somos” (“Who We Are”) and “Mulheres Investidoras” (“Women Investors”), using contributions from Medeiros (2023), Orlandi (2003, 2015, 2023), and Lagazzi (2009) to reflect on how neoliberal discourse operates within feminist narratives.
Beatriz Pereira Nunes Paragó Raquel Anne Lucas Magalhães Silmara Dela-Silva Copyright (c) 2024 Beatriz Pereira Nunes Paragó, Raquel Anne Lucas Magalhães, Silmara Dela-Silva https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 202 225 10.21747/21833958/red15a7 Political Communication Contract on Instagram: A Semiolinguistic Analysis https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14350
This article examines the structure of political discourse conveyed on Instagram to infer how the political communication contract is established on this social network platform. This study is theoretical, methodological, and qualitative and based on concepts of Discourse Analysis developed by Charaudeau (1983) within the framework of his Semiolinguistic Theory. To understand the notions of political discourse and political communication contracts with their strategies, we rely on Charaudeau (2018). To understand the particularities of Instagram as a device for the creation and dissemination of political discourse, we looked for a theoretical apparatus in the works of Piovezani Filho (2007), Castells (2021), Charaudeau (2018) and Recuero, Bastos and Zago (2020). In this investigation, we found that the political discourse broadcast on Instagram follows the structure of the political communication contract, but due to technological, cultural and social changes, this discourse has transformed to adapt to the characteristics of the web, a space in which fluidity, creativity, and dynamism are valued. This study concludes that Instagram presents itself as a powerful and important device in political strategy that is capable of reaching many users of these networks and potential voters, combining the structuring characteristics of the political communication contract with strategies inherent to the webspace, which makes Instagram a permanent platform.
Lidiane Reis Alves Pimenta Luciana Soares da Silva Copyright (c) 2024 Lidiane Reis Alves Pimenta, Luciana Soares da Silva https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 226 253 10.21747/21833958/red15a8 Reading Gestures of the Picturebook Ida e Volta by Juarez Machado: Mobilizing Discourse Analysis in School Practices https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14114
This article discusses reading gestures of picturebooks, grounded in the theoretical and methodological framework of Materialist Discourse Analysis. Understanding that the reader-subject produces meanings while being simultaneously constituted, we propose that reading a picturebook goes beyond the apparent notion that this material merely serves to encourage or innovate reading practices. Reading the image mobilizes the emergence of the child reader-subject’s stance towards what is read. The corpus of this study consists of responses and activities derived from a reading practice of the picturebook Ida e Volta (Juarez Machado), followed by the collective production of a picturebook involving fourth-grade students from an elementary school in northwestern Paraná, Brazil. The analysis results highlight, on one hand, the polysemic nature of the image as students attribute meanings to the book's scenes, and on the other, a relationship of identification with a consumerist discursive formation, echoing meanings related to the tension between care and material loss.
Luciana Cristina Ferreira Dias Di Raimo Cintia Bicudo Copyright (c) 2024 Luciana Cristina Ferreira Dias Di Raimo, Cintia Bicudo https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 254 281 10.21747/21833958/red15a9 Ideology and Memory in the Production of Child Meanings in the Discourse of a Pedagogical Political Project https://ojstest.xyz/ojsletras/index.php/re/article/view/14167
Based on Materialist Discourse Analysis founded by Michel Pêcheux, this qualitative research undertakes an analytical-discursive approach to unveil the functioning of discourse through the materiality of language. It examines how the discourse of a Pedagogical Political Project (PPP) from a preschool located in the northern coast of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, reflects the social dimensions of language in relation to discourse. The PPP, revised in 2019, serves as a document in which meanings and knowledge about early childhood education, teaching, and children circulate. Excerpts were selected using an empirical observation strategy focusing on what was excessively articulated, allowing for the identification of regularities within the discourse thread and the formation of two Paraphrastic Families (PF): Child-Project and Child-Potential, inscribed in the Childhood Discursive Formation (CDF). The study aimed to understand discursive processes, repetitions, pre-constructed elements, and aspects constituting the memory of discourse. The analyses revealed that the PPP discourse interacts with the discourses of other groups dedicated to studying children – sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, doctors, jurists, religious leaders, educators, and politicians. These interactions highlighted not only the antecedence of meanings articulated elsewhere but also antagonistic relationships among diverse meanings of childhood.
Valéria da Silva Silveira Dóris Maria Luzzardi Fiss Copyright (c) 2024 Valéria da Silva Silveira, Dóris Maria Luzzardi Fiss https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 15 282 310 10.21747/21833958/red15a10
